How to Find Quality Information:

Mrs. Drozdz has suggested several types of sources that are appropriate for your Literature Review. Use the links below to help you locate information from each type using trusted web sites and recommended databases like e-Library and Academic One File.

1. Professional Family/Sociological Journals

Academic One File (Publication Search)
- Click on the Basic Search tab
- Click on "More Search Options"
- Check the Limit Results: "to documents with full text"
- In the "by Publication Title" box type one of the following:
  - Journal of Marriage and Family
  - Family Relations
  - Journal of Family Issues
- Enter your keywords in the search box and hit the search button.
- Repeat these steps to search each of the recommended journals.
e-Library Curriculum Edition (a BookCart has already been created to help you search from selected journal titles)
- Log into e-Library Curriculum Edition
- Click on "Bookcarts" at the top of the page.
- Scroll down and choose "Family Issues Independent Study" from the list of topics.
- Enter your keywords then press "Search".

2. Non-fiction, Research-based Books

SEARCH the library catalog for books in our school library. For more help, check out this tutorial. You might also want to search for books in the Essex County Library.
BROWSE the bookshelves for books on your topic. Try these general Dewey Decimal Areas for information on your topic:

3. Research-based Periodicals

Academic One File
- Click on the "Subject Guide" search tab
- Under Limit Results: click on 'to documents with full-text' and 'to peer-reviewed publications'
- Enter your subject heading into the search box then press the search key.
- Click on a BOLD Subject Heading to see all articles about that topic.
- Click on the Related Subjects link to see a list of other Subject Headings you might be interested in or to narrow down your topic.
e-Library Curriculum Edition
- Click on "Clear All" to reset the search page
- Click on "Magazines"
- Choose Emphasis On: "Scholarly"
- Enter your keywords in the search box then press the "Search" button

- Use either a Basic Search or a Subject Search to look for results on your topic.
- From the results page, click on the "Multimedia" tab
e-Library Curriculum Edition
- Click on "Clear All" to reset the search page
- Click on "Audio/Visual" and "Transcripts"
- Enter your keywords in the search box then press the "Search" button
CBC News in Review Videos.
- Ask Mrs. Braithwaite for the News in Review Binder to check if we have videos in the school library on your topic

6. Newspaper and Magazine articles

Academic One File
- Use either a Basic Search or a Subject Search to look for results on your topic.
- From the results page, click on the "News" tab

- Click on "Clear All" to reset the search page
- Click on "Magazines" and "Newspapers"
- Enter your keywords in the search box then press the "Search" button

How to Find Quality Information:

1. Print Sources (Books and Magazines)

BROWSE for books on literature in the 800's.
REFERENCE the Great Writers of the English Language encyclopedia series in the reference section for general information on an author.
SEARCH the library catalog. For more help, check out this tutorial.

2. Subscription Databases

There are MANY collections of newspaper and magazine articles, etc. available through the GECDSB Student Reference Portal. Here are a few good choices to get you started on this assignment -- ask for passwords at the library desk.

*ProQuest Learning: Literature -- This is a special topic feature of eLibrary Curriculum Edition. Log into eLibrary, then click on the "Literature" link on the right hand sidebar. Use the "Author" tab to search for biography, criticism, multimedia, weblinks and more!

Knowledge Ontario: Intermediate/Senior: Use the "Select" buttons at the side of the page to search several databases at the same time. Some of the best sources for this assignment are:

Academic OneFile: This will give you excellent information on criticism and interpretation of an author's work from leading academic journals.
General One File: Is a good source for news and magazine articles. Search here for general information and book reviews.
Gale Virtual Reference Library: Use this to search for biography information from the Encyclopedia of World Biography.

RESEARCH TIP: When asked, always limit your results to Full-Text. This will save you the frustration of finding articles that we don't have access to.

Try the World Book Encyclopedia in the reference section for general information.

2. Suggested Web sites (Try these web sites for trustworthy, up-to-date information)

ENDANGERED SPECIES IN CANADA:

Species At Risk Public Registry: Supported by the Government of Canada and the Ministry of the Environment, "the Public Registry is your source for news, information, and documents related to species at risk in Canada."
- Click on "List of Wildlife Species at Risk" on the right hand side of the page for a list of endangered species and links to detailed information about each species.
Hinterland Who's Who: Supported by the Canadian Wildlife Service & Canadian Wildlife Federation, this web site provides in-depth fact sheets on Canadian Wildlife.
- Type a common species name into the search box at the top of the page to access its fact sheet.
The Canadian Encyclopedia: Use the search box to find general information on a species.

ENDANGERED SPECIES AROUND THE WORLD:

IUCN Red List: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has created this database to track threatened species on a global scale.
- Browse the List of Threatened Species or
- Search for detailed information on a species -- you'll find detailed information about the species, current conservation measures, and major threats
  - Click on the "Images and External Links" tab for even more trusted web sites.

Part Two: How to Make a Brochure

Click on the "Library" Icon on your desktop.
Click on "WordPerfect"
From the "File" menu choose "New from Project" then choose "Brochure" to open a template.

How to Find Quality Information:

1. Print Sources (Books and Magazines)

BROWSE for books on Health and Disease in the 616's, also check the Encyclopedia of Diseases in the 616's and the World Book Encyclopedia in the reference section for general information.
SEARCH the library catalog. For more help, check out this tutorial.

2. Subscription Databases

Gale Health and Wellness Resource Centre : Search for information, also check out the links under the Trusted Websites tab
E-Library Curriculum Edition: Click on Topics --> Science --> Health and Medical Science --> Nutrition for a useful topic directory. Or use the "Search" tab to look for information in newspapers and magazines.

3. Suggested Websites (Try these websites for trustworthy, up-to-date information)

Mayo Clinic -- Food and Nutrition Center: Find information on food and nutrition and what constitutes a healthy diet, healthy cooking and healthy eating.
Health Canada -- Food and Nutrition: Information on food safety and nutrition including information on Canada's Food Guide, genetically modified foods, nutrient intake, and nutrition labeling.
Public Health Agency of Canada: Want to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle? The government has lots of information on nutrition and healthy eating to help you.
Dietitians of Canada: Enjoy great tastes, fun times and a lifetime of good health through daily healthy eating choices where you live, work, learn, and play. Use this web site as your guide.
